In an interview with Empire magazine, Atwell shared that she initially hesitated to accept the part because she feared it would reinforce a limited view of women in action films.

"I didn't want to be just an ice queen, a femme fatale," Atwell said. "I wanted to bring more depth and humanity to the role." The actress worked closely with director Christopher McQuarrie to develop a character that was both formidable and vulnerable, capable of both physical and emotional strength.
